Day 4 - Looking at greeting cards for no reason at all.

SY 06-07 1st Sem Recap: COM 144 - INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING (M 930-1230)

There were countless times when I thought to myself: "Why did I take this subject?" Sure I liked journalism but going this deep (or in Ayee's terms, the next level) isn't my thing. I've had my share of doubts and metaphysical unease with this subject, but I'm happy with what I've learned and experienced.

It seemed only last Monday that the class chillaxed on a 15-minute break.It seemed only last last Monday that we had mock interviews to prime ourselves for big fish interviewing.
It seemed only five Mondays ago (9 October 2006 to be exact) that Miss Chay Hofilena left us with her parting words.
Well, I'm done reminiscing. Just enjoy the photos!

Obviously, this class is a (almost) tightly-knit group and every week was like hanging out with your close friends for three hours.

SY 06-07 1st Sem Recap: EC 102 - BASIC ECONOMICS (MWF 730-830)

I will never forget this subject for several reasons. One being that economics - a topic that I once thought to be boring - was brought into a fun light by the man below - Mr. Patrick Gerard Simon-King.
The Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility - something that stuck to my mind even after the sem ended - thanks to the free snacks.
It is only in this class that you can relate economics to an episode of The Simpsons.
The early schedule! Man, my Wednesdays and Fridays last sem were never more fun with both days ending at 8:30 AM! You know what that meant! WHOOO!!
Of course, the ever-infamous group project at Manila's photography district- R. Hidalgo street. Although the grade for that project didn't add up to my expectations, it was still fun...
because three people got to experience the taste of Ramon Lee's Chicken - the LEGEND among LEGENDS in Manila fine dining! KFC ain't got nothing on Ramon Lee! WHOOO!
And the cool Japanese-era bill souveneir and lectures aside, the most important thing that Mr. Simon-King imparted to us was his prayer which went something like this:

Dearest Lord,

For all that has been, thank you. For all that will be, yes!

Amen.

SY 06-07 1st Sem Recap: COM 102 - COMMUNICATION RESEARCH (T-TH 9-1030)

Mr. Sev Sarmenta's wacky yet simultaneously informative teaching style aside, Comm Res was, for the most part, a pretty good subect, largely because of my groupmates.

Now, I'll confess that I had doubts that our group would have some issues, I mean, Sure, Scott I knew from English and Lit class, Sab, acquaintance before but chummies after this sem, and Trisha, never met her until this sem. Ehem. But all in all, it's a good thing we were able to finish off those projects. Anyone care to reminisce the A's? Haha!

But we DID have a setback, like the "bungled" FRIENDS content analysis. It's cool, it's cool. At least we got to hang out at Trisha's place.

Thank you Sab for pulling us through those paperwork! I really aprreciate it. And on a related note, let's cover the Lady Eagles again next time!

Scott, thanks for the printing and legwork! Sorry I wasn't able to join you and Sab at the Sabungan.

SY 06-07 1st Sem Recap: CHN 46 - MASS MEDIA IN CHINA (T-TH 300-430)

This is one of the classes that i will sorely miss come next semester. Media in China taught me so much about Mainland China's media culture and behavior - from how Chinese journalism began under Liang QiChao to the student revolt in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

One of the most important things I learned from this class is: There is no chance in hell that I would want to work as a journalist in China. NO EFFIN WAY!!! I can'r even imagine HOW they (the Chinese journalists) survive there, with the censorship and all. Please.

Anyway, my big thanks to Rosa Ladrido for leading the way in our class' learning. Although we may only be a humble six in the class, I feel that what you've imparted to us will really leave a mark in our lives.

Bad timing is an understatement when I caught a fever yesterday, the weekend before Finals week (bakit naka-capitalize? parang NBA Finals kasi eh. This week is all or nothing!). Nevertheless, this predicament will only strengthen my resolve, my resolve to at least not fail miserably in all my final exams/requirements!

AN OLD FACE OF R. HIDALGO?

I passed by R. Hidalgo Street yesterday and chanced upon the three-day inagural celebration of the newly renovated photography district of Manila. I was just going to pass by and get my prints but I stopped to watch to festivities.

My cap is off to John Chua for taking the inititative to revitalize the heartland of Philippine photography. But the road concretizations (?) and potted plants aside, Quiapo will always be Quiapo. According to Chua's plans, sidewalk vendors will be completely relocated to a nearby area and those vendors who are willing can become assistants to the local photographers frequenting Hidalgo.

Lo and behold, there still are vendors plying their wares along Hidalgo (although they are fewer now) and most of them converged along Plaza Miranda, which makes walking along Quiapo Church very uncomfortable. You can say whatever you want, plan whatever you want but you can't easily brush off sidewalk vendors like they were dust on your kitchen floor.

Problems like sidewalk vendors are very difficult to fix. It's like an endless cycle.

I really have to thank Luigi for inviting me to one of Mishka Adams' gig at Mag:Net Katipunan last year. Mishka has the voice of an angel. It's just too bad she flew to UK to pursue her career there. I hope she comes back soon.

Flipping through old issues of Matanglawin, one of Ateneo's student publications, I came across a cool artwork by a freshman. I asked my editor, Pol, if that freshman was still around. He said no. "He (the freshman) didn't re-apply this year." "Why?" I asked. Pol replied, "He's not around Ateneo anymore. His family can't pay for his tuition for his sophomore year."

It's a really sad situation and that's the second person I know that stopped their education due to financial constraints. The first one is a close friend of mine. He's doing fine now, working part-time.

Education should be a right, not a privilege.

For the past few days, e-mails (and rumors, I'm guessing) have circulated around Ateneo that all cats within campus grounds will be exterminated tomorrow using "BB guns" and "drowning" since there was a incident that a student was bitten by a cat. For both those cats' and Tita Nitz' sake , I hope that's just a sick rumor. If not, somebody call PETA!
